Freddy García meets AUF referee chief after talks with Ignacio Alonso

1 min read

Peñarol presidential hopeful Freddy García has held a meeting with Marcelo De León, head of the Uruguayan Football Association’s (AUF) refereeing department. The talks came a week after he sat down with AUF president Ignacio Alonso, two figures who have been frequent targets of criticism from the incumbent Peñarol president, Ignacio Ruglio.

A channel of communication with the football authorities

García’s sequence of meetings suggests he is looking to build working relationships with the AUF leadership ahead of the club’s election. Both Alonso and De León have been at the centre of disputes with the current Peñarol administration, which makes the outreach a notable step for the candidate.

Ruglio’s ongoing criticism of the two officials adds a political layer to the contacts. Whether García’s approach will translate into a change in how Peñarol deals with the AUF remains to be seen, but the meetings have already put the relationship between the club’s opposition and the national governing body in the spotlight.
