Montevideo City Torque defender Kevin Silva was shown a red card for a reckless outburst in the final minutes of his side’s match. Referee Esteban Ostojich sent him off without a word, after Silva had let his frustration boil over. The dismissal came two minutes from the end, with City Torque already comfortably ahead by two goals. Silva now faces a one- or two-match suspension.
Suspensions for Pizzichillo and Guasone
Two other players will also miss a game. Franco Pizzichillo of MC Torque and Juan Cruz Guasone of Cerro were both booked, and the yellow cards accumulated to five, which triggers an automatic one-match ban for each.
Minute of silence for Julio César Dalmao
Before kickoff, the stadium observed a respectful minute of silence in memory of Julio César Dalmao. The former defender was a South American champion with Uruguay at Ecuador 1959 and died last Tuesday at the age of 86. He was also a standout figure in the Cerro side that finished runners-up in the Uruguayan championship in 1960, losing the decisive final to Peñarol. Condolences were extended to his family and to the club from the Villa Colón neighbourhood.
Switch of venue for City Torque
Montevideo City Torque hosted the match at the Estadio Franzini rather than its usual home, the Estadio Charrúa, which has a synthetic pitch. The decision was made at the request of coach Marcelo Méndez, who wanted his players on natural grass. The reason was the heavy physical toll of their semifinal in the Copa Sudamericana, played the previous Wednesday.
Penalty save and contrasting reactions
Just before the half-hour mark, goalkeeper Yonatan Irrazábal saved a penalty from Salomón Rodríguez. The keeper celebrated by pointing his right index finger towards the sky, while the striker covered his face with his shirt in despair, a vivid picture of the highs and lows of the game.
