Danubio have been relegated to the Segunda División Profesional after losing to Nacional, ending their stay in Uruguay’s top flight. The striped side collapsed on the pitch in the heavy rain at full time, while Nacional players came over to console them. It is the second time the club have been relegated in six years.
A proud club in decline
Danubio were last relegated in 2020. They are one of the most traditional clubs in Uruguayan football and have won the national title four times. The club has produced many notable players, including Rubén Sosa, Marcelo Zalayeta, Álvaro Recoba, Edinson Cavani, José María Giménez and Walter Gargano. This season, however, they struggled throughout the campaign.
Cabrera left in tears
Enzo Cabrera scored Danubio’s goal in the match. He was substituted in the second half after missing a one-on-one chance with Alexis Martín Arias that could have given his side a second goal. Cabrera was visibly distraught from the bench and was still in tears after the final whistle.
Injury and cut
Leandro Sosa picked up a problem to his left hamstring late in the game and had to leave the field. It appears to be a tear, but he will undergo medical tests to confirm the diagnosis. Mauro Brasil also needed treatment after an aerial challenge left him with a cut lip. He had to leave the pitch briefly so the bleeding could be stopped.
Suspensions ahead of the final rounds
Lucas Rodríguez and Francisco Calvo both received their fifth yellow card of the campaign, which rules them out of the penultimate round of the Torneo Clausura. In that round, Nacional face Albion. Costa Rica defender Calvo will miss the match in any case, as he has been called up by his national team.
