The finals of the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana are now set, and they already offer a clear picture of how the 2027 Libertadores spots in the Brazilian Serie A could be distributed. Palmeiras, currently second in the league, face Estudiantes in the Libertadores decfinal, and that result could open up a ‘G-6’ scenario in the domestic table.
Palmeiras win Libertadores: a G-6 scenario
If Palmeiras lift the trophy, the fifth-placed team in the Brasileirao would earn a direct place in the group stage of the Libertadores, based on the current standings. Fluminense, who sit fifth, would therefore head to the competition in 2027, while the sixth-placed side would move into the preliminary rounds.
Atletico-MG and the Sudamericana
In the Sudamericana, Boca Juniors and Atletico-MG will contest the title. The winner also secures a group-stage berth. Atletico-MG are currently sixth, one point behind Fluminense. If they win the Sudamericana and climb into the top five, the direct spot would move down to the sixth-placed club, with the seventh-placed team going to the preliminary stage. If Atletico-MG win the title while remaining sixth, the seventh-placed side would advance to the second qualifying phase.
A possible G-9
The picture gets more complicated if Atletico-MG and Palmeiras both qualify for the Libertadores and reach the Copa do Brasil final. In that case, the ‘G-6’ could effectively become a ‘G-9’, with seven direct places and two spots for the preliminary rounds, given that both clubs would be among the top six and would have won their continental competitions.
The Copa do Brasil factor
The national cup also plays a role. Should Atletico-MG win the continental title after reaching the Copa do Brasil final, the cup’s Libertadores place would pass to the Brasileirao. The same logic applies to Palmeiras and to Vasco, both of whom are fighting relegation. According to the Conmebol club manual, clubs that are not in the top flight cannot take part in the continental tournament. So if one of them qualifies through the national cup but is relegated from the league, the place would be passed on through the Brasileirao.
The current semifinal lineups
The Copa do Brasil semifinals pit Atletico-MG (sixth in the league) against Gremio (18th), and Palmeiras (second) against Vasco (15th).
How the 2027 spots are structured
The Brasileirao rules this year provide five Libertadores places: four direct and one for the preliminary stage. This is a change from recent seasons. Two more spots come from the Copa do Brasil, one direct and one for the second qualifying phase, and these move to the league if the cup finalists have already qualified through other routes.
In short, the teams that could alter the league’s allocation are Atletico-MG, through the Sudamericana and the Copa do Brasil, Palmeiras, through the Libertadores and the cup, and, in the case of relegation, Vasco and Gremio if they reach the cup final. Every result in the remaining rounds could shift the picture.
