Palmeiras wrapped up their match against Remo in a single half, scoring a flurry of goals before the break. Coach Abel Ferreira then used the second half to rest players ahead of the Copa do Brasil semi-final second leg against Vasco da Gama.
Paraguayan influence at the back and up front
Paraguayans featured prominently for the home side. Gustavo Gómez anchored the defence from the back before being replaced in the second half by Alexander Barboza. Mauricio Magalhães Prado also got on the scoresheet, adding one of the early goals. Antonio Galeano was among the Remo substitutes.
A first half to forget for Remo
Colombian forward Arias scored twice, in the third and 13th minutes. Mauricio added his goal in the 20th minute, and Marcelinho deflected the ball into his own net, a decision confirmed by VAR. Argentina’s José Manuel ‘Flaco’ López and Felipe Anderson also found the net for the hosts. Remo, second from bottom and under pressure to avoid relegation, pulled one back through José Welison before the interval.
Title race tightens
Flamengo had already done their part, beating Gremio 3-1 on Wednesday. Pedro scored twice in that match and is now one goal behind the league’s top scorer, Kevin Viveros. Flamengo still lead the table, but their advantage over Palmeiras is down to three points.
The two sides meet on Saturday, 21 November, when Palmeiras host Flamengo in round 36 of the Brasileirão. With the gap this narrow, the match looks set to be a de facto decider for the championship.
