Athletico-PR investigates fan over racist gesture at Vasco players

2 min read

Athletico-PR has opened an internal inquiry to identify a supporter accused of making a racist gesture towards Vasco players after the Rio club’s 3-1 win at the Arena da Baixada on Wednesday night.

Videos of the players’ celebrations show a person in the stands mimicking monkey movements at the Curitiba stadium, the home ground of the Paranaense club. The gesture came as Vasco’s players were celebrating in front of the away supporters.

Clubs working together

Both clubs have been cooperating to identify the individual since the end of Wednesday night. Vasco have also handed over their footage, recorded by VascoTV, to help Athletico with the process.

Comeback and celebration

The result was a comeback victory for Vasco. After the final whistle, the players moved towards the two sectors reserved for visiting fans to celebrate and join in the traditional ‘Casaca’ chant. The club’s official television team had a camera inside the pitch and recorded the scenes.

A long-awaited win

The victory also ended a long run without success. Vasco had gone 19 years without beating Athletico-PR at the Arena da Baixada. Considering only the Brazilian league, the Rio side had never won at the stadium and had not beaten the Furacão away from home since 1998.
