Athletico-PR threw away a half-time lead in six minutes, losing 3-1 to Vasco at the Arena da Baixada in round 34 of the Brasileirão. The defeat was one of the most damaging of the season for the Curitiba side, which now faces a difficult run-in as it chases a direct place in the Copa Libertadores.
Six minutes that changed everything
Athletico had controlled the first half under Odair Hellmann, who made several changes to the starting line-up. Mendoza, deployed on the wing, gave the hosts a 1-0 lead, finishing a move that began with a pass from Arthur Dias for Luiz Gustavo. The collapse came after the restart, when Vasco, under Pedro Emanuel, reshaped their attack with Bruno Duarte and Colidio, and Athletico’s defence started to unravel.
Vasco’s equaliser was an own goal by Aguirre, who deflected a cross from Cuiabano into his own net. Moments later Bruno Duarte headed in from a Puma Rodríguez cross after Arthur Dias had been dragged out of position. Four minutes after that, Gabriel Pereira scored from a free kick on the left, and the hosts had no clear chance to respond.
Discipline and goalkeeping problems
The third goal came from a set piece, the 20th conceded by Athletico this way in the Brasileirão. With the score at 3-1, Kevin Viveros stepped on Cuiabano’s stomach and was sent off, ruling him out of the match against Flamengo. He could face additional suspension depending on the decision of the STJD.
Goalkeeper Mycael also had a difficult night. In the first half he fumbled a save, allowing a rebound, and collided with Brenner, but no penalty was awarded. He was not solely responsible for Vasco’s goals, but his lack of confidence throughout the game was seen as unsettling for the rest of the team.
Injury worries and a worrying run
Athletico also face fitness concerns. Mendoza left at half-time with a knee problem, and Esquivel played the entire match in pain. Both will be assessed, and either could miss the crucial games ahead.
The result leaves Athletico in a poor run of form: three defeats and a draw in their last four league games, with eight goals conceded and only two scored. With four rounds remaining, the club must regroup quickly. The international break gives the coaching staff time to work on mental resilience, defensive set pieces and, possibly, a decision on Mycael’s future in goal.
