Chapecoense have been relegated to Série B of the Brazilian championship after a 2-1 home defeat to Mirassol at the Arena Condá. Mirassol came from behind to win, and the result sealed the drop for the Santa Catarina club on Tuesday.
It is the third time Chapecoense have gone down since Brazil’s Série A adopted the round-robin points format. They were also relegated in 2019 and 2021, so the club now has a painful pattern to answer for.
2019: a slow slide
In 2019, Chapecoense’s fate was confirmed in the 35th round after a 1-0 defeat to Botafogo at the Arena Condá. The club finished with 32 points and 19th place, ahead of only Avaí, who had 20. Over the campaign, Chapecoense scored 31 goals, conceded 52, won seven matches, drew 11 and lost 20.
2021: the earliest confirmation
The 2021 season was the worst in the history of the points-table format, and it ended the club’s stay in the top flight the earliest of the three. Chapecoense were officially relegated in the 31st round without even playing, after Santos beat Bragantino 2-0.
That team collected only 15 points and finished bottom of the table. Chapecoense won just one game all season, a 2-1 victory away to Bragantino. They scored 27 goals and conceded 67, leaving a goal difference of -40.
A familiar fate
Chapecoense now face a return to Série B, with their 2026 campaign ending in the same way as the previous two relegations. The club’s supporters will be hoping the next chapter brings a quicker route back to the top flight.
